WYMAN: Hot and a Cold in Alabama

WYMAN: Hot and a Cold in Alabama

Well, here we are! My Dad and I are currently down here in Cropwell, Alabama hanging out at a campground awaiting the final round of the AMA Pro Road Racing series this weekend. Here’s a recap of our last few days down here:

We left New York last Thursday afternoon wearing heavy jackets as the temperature had been starting to drop into the low 50’s the past few weeks. We watched the thermometers go up as we headed down south for track days at Barber Motorsports Park hosted by Sport Bike Track Time. My plans didn’t include a cold that I was starting to get on the ride down, and as soon as that hot humid air hit my sinuses it turned into a nasty one. I did everything I could, got as much sleep as possible and took the medicine but the cold was relentless. I settled into the fact that I would be testing this weekend without the ability to breathe through my nose. And geez, the weatherman was projecting record high temperatures reaching near 100 degrees all weekend.

But, how could I let anything bring me down? I hadn’t ridden since the AMA round at NJMP and here I was at a racetrack again about to saddle up. If I could ride every day of the week, I would do it, through sickness and through health. Yup, let’s just say I love being on a motorcycle that much!

Jason DiSalvo, a close friend from NY has been living down in this area on and off with his wife, Bethany, so it was a no brainer to have him come out and ride with me on Saturday to see if he could help me find some extra time. I mean, he has a few laps around this place! All day we worked on lines and bike setup, and it was such a big help having him there to coach me on a track that I wasn’t all that familiar with. By the end of the day we had made boatloads of progress, and came up with a plan for Sunday. Jason would be leaving to go ride his Indy Moto2 bike at Road Atlanta the next day, so I was on my own for the remainder of the weekend. Sunday was HOT, but we stuck to the plan and made even more progress by the end of the day.

So with a week in between before we head back to the track, what better to do than hit up the links, ride some flat track, and go flying? Monday Jason and I played 18 holes near his Talladega home in 100 degree plus weather, but had a great time slowing it down a bit for a laid-back day.

Tuesday I headed up to Huntsville where my buddy Russ Wikle had invited me to go ride some dirt track at a local 1/5 mile with him. I hadn’t strapped up a steel shoe in over a year so it was good to get back out there and get sideways again. Russ has been running the Pro Singles this season in his first year racing flat track and has been progressing very well. We had the track all to ourselves for a few hours and got to bang some handlebars. It’s such good cross training to get back on the dirt and target some different riding muscles, and should set us up for a good weekend back on the sportbikes!

For the past year or so I’ve been going to flight school working on getting my private pilots license. I haven’t had the opportunity to take lessons lately, and Russ’ father, Luther Wikle, has his own Cessna 172 that’s in need of some ‘tach time.’ It was a relief to get up in the air without the pressure of an instructor in the right seat (but I was still learning). We took off out of Birmingham International Airport and were up in the air for about 45 minutes but it was the most relaxing part of the whole week.

Now it’s time to get back down to business and prepare for the weekend. I’m glad to have this cold finally out of my system, and can’t wait for the race. See you all there!
