Kyle Wyman: Bring on the Heat

NEWS July 5, 2012

(July 5, 2012) - I'm in Manhattan right now! Yup, that's right... right smack in the middle of NYC. I've been here a couple of times before, but never have I spent more than a day in the Big Apple. I'm here right now visiting my title sponsor, KLR Group, who had our team put together a 'show bike'
XR1200 from Spyke's Harley-Davidson to display in their offices up here.

It feels great to have such support behind me and my program. I'm grateful for the people and opportunities that have come my way this season, and of course the people who have been there since the beginning. My Dad, Mom, brothers and the rest of my family have always been supportive of my career, as well as long time sponsors like Arai Helmets, Long Pond Autobody, Chicken Hawk Racing, and return sponsors such as Kuryakyn, Sidi, Held and Motion Pro. I've found that people and relationships are so very important in this industry, and I'm just so glad to be surrounded by the best!

It's been about a week since I've been on a motorcycle. We had our most recent race at Barber Motorsports Park, immediately followed by an AMA Pro test at the brand new NOLA Motorsports Park just outside New Orleans. In late June, you can only imagine how hot it can be in these southern cities - and they did not disappoint.

Barber was a great weekend! I was able to come away with my second consecutive win after Road America, and was able to do so at one of my favorite race tracks on the schedule. It was particularly sweet as well, because Gaston Kearby and his son, Collin, from KLR Group and GK Motorsports were present for their first ever motorcycle road race.
Gaston has been supporting me since the Road Atlanta round this year, and I was extremely satisfied to be able to get a win while the boss-man himself was watching from pit lane! It was a great race-long battle for the lead. It was also very, very hot, but the atmosphere at Planet Fitness has been inviting enough to keep me in the gym constantly, and I was properly conditioned to withstand the temperatures that the southeastern part of the US tends to dish out. NOLA was even worse!

Just when you think 95 degrees is enough, try 105. It was blisteringly hot in New Orleans last week! Not only is it hotter and tougher, but the amount of time that we spend on the bike during test events is significantly more as well. I made close to 80 laps during the two-day event, but every bit of track time is valuable when it comes to finding a good setup and developing the bike.

We were able to try many different things, and with the support from Ohlins and Superbike Chassis, we made some big steps forward in terms of suspension setup. The fact that we were 1.9 seconds faster per lap than any other XR1200 at the test was merely a bonus.

Next stop on the schedule is Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. I'd like to call it my home track, because it's the closest race track to my hometown, even though it is still a 6 hour drive away. I wouldn't call upstate NY a road racing hotbed by any means, but it's my home, and I can't wait to go back to Mid-Ohio. I was able to finish on the podium there last year after a race-long battle, and I look forward to having some great racing again this year.

Mid-Ohio is the last stop on the schedule before the XR Showdown begins.
The XR Showdown is a new points structure that resets the top-10 riders in points to 1000 before the last 5 rounds. It then becomes a 5-race dash in the championship hunt, with the overall winner taking home $25,000. It's my goal to be prepared for the Showdown, or as I like to call it, the "chase." With two wins in a row, I couldn't think of a better way to enter the chase than with a 3rd consecutive win at Mid-Ohio next weekend. My sights are set on week at a time, so let's go racing!
