NEW ORLEANS, La. (Oct. 6, 2012) - Championship points leader Michael Barnes rolled to a steady lap of 1:51.227 around NOLA Motorsports Park Saturday to earn the No. 2 spot in the provisional field of the Big Kahuna New Orleans.
Tyler O'Hara, whom Barnes leads by just two points in the rankings, ended up third, with Ben Carlson a tick behind in fourth. Barnes, O'Hara and Carlson are the only three riders with realistic chances at the season championship, which will be decided at 12:30 p.m., Sunday.
"We tried lots of different things today, making sure we get everything we can out of the KLR Group/Spyke's Harley-Davidson," Barnes said. "It's supposed to be considerably cooler tomorrow morning when we run the second qualifying session so we expect things will change quite a bit. Everyone should be quicker, including us.
"This KLR Group race team has won a lot of races this year with Kyle (Wyman) and his bike so they obviously know what they're doing. I'm having a blast riding with this group. The only bummer is that Kyle's not racing this weekend."
Barnes is fresh off a victory in Miami where he passed O'Hara on the last lap to win the trophy and move into the points lead. Overall, he has two wins and nine podium finishes in 11 starts this year in the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series.
"We should be in for another great race," Barnes said. "You can count on Tyler being on his game and everyone else will be trying to win the last race of the year. It will be a free-for-all.
"I'm ready. I've played every scenario over in my head. I've been carrying this laidback approach and trying to not focus on the points deal. Now, with one race to go, it's pretty simple; I just need to win and then there's no way I can lose."
