INDIANAPOLIS (August 9, 2014) - Kyle Wyman came from seemingly nowhere to claim the final spot on the podium in the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson series Race 1 at Indianapolis earlier today.
The New Yorker started 7th on the grid, and was held back to a lonely 5th place as the race took shape. He then clawed his way back from a two-second gap to catch the lead group with one lap to spare.
"I just showed up a little late to the party," Wyman said. I didn't really get a bad start, but I was on the third row and got caught up with a couple of guys. By the time I was free, I had lost some ground. I knew we had a little better tire life on our bike with the Nitron shocks, so that was the key for me. I knew if I stayed consistent with fast laps and didn't make any mistakes, the tire life would be in my favor. The last laps, those guys slowed down and I stayed the same. It allowed me to make two passes on the last lap. I would have liked to have seen what I could have done if I had been up there from the get-go.
Luckily for Wyman, a race win is not out of the cards for the Indianapolis MotoGP weekend. With one more race on tomorrow's schedule, the New Yorker feels he has a great shot at a race win for Sunday's race two.
"I've become more and more comfortable with my Millennium Technologies XR1200 and how it reacts on this new Indianapolis circuit," Wyman added. "When the lights go out tomorrow, I'll have even more confidence in the bike from the start and I don't plan on letting the lead group get away. I'll have an even better shot at conserving tires if I can do some pack-riding from lap one."
