  • AMA Pro Racing back to Mazda Raceway! SWEET!
Posted on: 09/09/2010 at 8:00 PM

Good news comes from AMA Pro Racing tonight about 2011... Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is on the schedule.  Talk was circulating that AMA Pro Racing might not attend the MotoGP weekend or even bring one class to race.  But in the end, for whatever reason, AMA Pro Racing returns to one of the best tracks we have in the US.  Add Miller Motorsports Park to the mix and you have one great year forming up.

This is the press release from AMA Pro Racing:

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (September 9, 2010) - AMA Pro Racing and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca are pleased to announce that AMA Pro Road Racing will return with MotoGP to the historic 2.258-mile circuit on California's Monterey peninsula as part of the 2011 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix.  The seventh running of the event will tentatively be held on July 22 - 24, 2011, with final confirmation coming with the release of the official FIM calendar later this month.

"We're all excited about returning to the world stage and to one of our favorite venues," said AMA Pro Chief Operating Officer and Managing Member, David Atlas. "Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a favorite amongst our riders and we know that they will put on a tremendous show for the fans."

In 2010, the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike race was won by a rider who loves everything about Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and he has the record here to prove it. Ben Bostrom culminated a very special weekend by winning from the pole position. He also won at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Daytona SportBike in 2009 and in a World Superbike race in 1999. Fellow Yamaha rider Josh Hayes is leading the National Guard SuperBike championship with one race left in the season.

"The best riders in the world and the U.S. will once again be together to treat our fans to incredible on-track action," said Gill Campbell, CEO/general manager for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The 2011 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix will host three classes of AMA Pro Road Racing: AMA Pro SuperSport, AMA Pro Daytona SportBike presented by AMSOIL and AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike in addition to the MotoGP World Championship. The date for the event is tentative, subject to the release of the full FIM calendar in September.

All general admission tickets, paddock passes, grandstand seats, parking and general camping for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix will go sale November 2, 2010 by phone at (800) 327-7322 or on-line at www.mazdaraceway.com.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was established in 1957. The world-renowned raceway has been operated since its inception by the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), a not-for-profit 501C(4) corporation. Each race season, SCRAMP donates its net proceeds to the volunteer groups that help put on the races.

Further information on the 2011 AMA Pro Road Racing schedule will be announced as it is finalized.   Please visit www.amaproracing.com for series information.

  • Numbers for thought...
Posted on: 09/07/2010 at 9:40 AM

How about these numbers from New Jersey Motorsports Park...

Looking at the margin of victory for both American Superbike and both Daytona Sportbike race finishes the total for all four races equals... 1.734 seconds!

The total laps raced for all four races: 92

    Margin of Victory (in seconds):

    Daytona SportBike Saturday: 0.796

    American SuperBike Saturday: 0.105

    Daytona SportBike Sunday: 0.509

    American SuperBike Sunday: 0.324

    Total: 1.734 seconds

I would love to see some numbers on another professional racing series that has closer race finishes than that!  I have not done any research on other series... so... ah... if they exist, my bad.  But I don't think so.

Only one race meeting, two races, remain in the 2010 season.  Get your butt off the couch and head to Birmingham, AL, then go east to Leeds and watch these incredible races at Barber Motorsports Park!  See ya out there.

  • GAGNE DOES IT!
Posted on: 09/04/2010 at 11:00 PM

Congratulations to Californian Jake Gagne.  The 17 year old captured the World Championship in the Red Bull Rookies Cup today in Misano Italy with a second place finish in the race.

    This from the press release:

“I got a good start and I was in the top five by the end of the first lap,” said the Ramona, California resident. “I knew I didn’t need to win but I needed to ride a smart race. Danny Kent needed to win and have me find some trouble.”

After a wild race that saw plenty of passing and shuffling at the front, Gagne found himself in fourth place on the last lap. Jake gained the needed spots to become Red Bull Rookies Cup champion as he moved into second place, just behind Kent. He set the fast lap of the race on the final time around the Misano circuit.

“My plan was to stick to the back of the lead group until the end. I wasn’t really worried about how the race was going. I knew I could outbrake the guys but I didn’t want to set myself up to get stuffed,” said Jake. “I didn’t want to make the passes until the right time. I got up into second with a few corners to go and that was it.”

Jake’s final tally in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup was 170 points, six ahead of Kent. The talented teen was excited after wining his first roadracing championship in just his third season on the pavement after a stellar career in youth motocross.

“We ended up pulling it off and I’m super stoked at how the year went,” concluded Gagne. “I want to thank everyone who helped me this year. It’s been fantastic.”

We hope to speak with Jake next week.
